China's 130+ Overseas Plants Redraw the EV Map

China's 130+ Overseas Plants Redraw the EV Map

2026-10-14

The headline out of China's auto industry in 2026 is not a single car. It is a number: more than 130 overseas factories, and the count is climbing fast.

From export to footprint

For two decades, "Chinese car" meant "shipped from a Chinese port." That model is ending. BYD runs plants or lines in Thailand, Brazil, Hungary and is scouting more; SAIC assembles in Spain; Chery runs the deepest pipeline across Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa and Europe. The plant-behind-the-wall strategy has gone from hedge to default.

The trigger is obvious. The EU's countervailing duty - up to 45.3% - makes a locally built car tariff-free, while an imported one pays the wall. A factory in the market is now cheaper than a boat from China, once volume justifies the line.

What it means for buyers

For overseas distributors, the plant wave changes the buying math. A brand with a local plant offers tariff-proof supply, shorter lead times, and a channel partnership rather than a container relationship. Allocation favours markets where the brand has committed capital. The tourist exporters - ship-only, no local footprint - get filtered out exactly when volume tightens.

The catch is real and worth naming: a new plant ramps slowly. Early local-built units are scarce and priced at launch, not discount. Do not over-commit year one; scale as the line matures.

The bigger shift

This is the structural story behind the export records. The 120% NEV export surge and the 130+ plant wave are the same strategy seen from two ends: sell abroad, then build abroad. The brands defining the next decade are not the ones with the most containers. They are the ones with the most concrete.

For importers, the read is operational: weight a supplier's local-footprint plan as heavily as its price sheet. The map is being redrawn, and the plants are the new borders.
