Chery Is China's Quiet Export Champion With 7 Million Units

2026-09-22

The most important Chinese car exporter of 2026 isn't BYD, and it isn't a flashy EV startup. It's Chery, and most buyers in the West have never seriously considered it.

That is a mistake.

Look at the raw numbers from China's August sales reporting, published around 11 September. Chery moved roughly 280,000 vehicles in the month. Export accounted for about 197,000 of them. That is more than 70 percent of the company's volume going overseas. Chery is now the first Chinese brand to pass 7 million cumulative vehicles exported. Not BYD. Not Geely. Chery.

And here is what the headline-chasing misses. Chery did not build that lead with one hit model or a viral launch. It built it over roughly a decade of sitting in markets nobody else wanted to serve properly: Russia, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia. When rivals treated those places as dump zones for leftover stock, Chery opened parts warehouses, trained local technicians, and kept spare components on the shelf through currency crashes and sanctions.

That is the unglamorous core of durable export. A distributor in Lima or Riyadh does not remember your Super Bowl ad. They remember whether the shock absorber arrived in two weeks or never. Chery remembered.

The lesson for importers is blunt. Stop ranking Chinese brands by domestic buzz. Rank them by local parts stock, by how many years they have already operated in your market, and by whether a vehicle you order today still has a service network in 2030. The famous name wins the press conference. The quiet one wins the service bay.

I will say the uncomfortable part out loud. A lot of buyers chase the brand they saw trending and then discover the support structure was a PowerPoint slide. Chery's edge is boring on purpose: it is already there.

None of this means ignore BYD or the EV specialists. It means your shortlist should include the brand with ten years of scars in your region, not just the one with the biggest battery reveal.

Before you sign, press the questions Chery's rivals often dodge: which SKUs already carry regional type approval, what the real lead time on body panels is, and who actually owns the warranty claim in your country. Chery usually has answers. That is the gap between a one-off shipment and a supply chain you can build a business on.

When you pick a China brand to distribute, do you bet on the famous name or the one with a decade of local parts stock already on the ground? Where do you land?
